The Jam Side Up Jazz Club was formed to give musicians an opportunity to meet and play music in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and to bring a little music culture to an otherwise quiet rural location.
We particularly want to encourage the less accomplished musician to use this venue to experience playing in front of a friendly audience and to expand their repertoire whilst giving the more competent musicians the chance to network with others.
The event is already popular with both listeners and musicians and will continue to run on a monthly basis. See the home page for up coming dates. If you would like to be kept informed by email please leave a note in the guest book with your email address. There will also be an email list circulating on the evening.
YOUR PARTY PIECE
There will be an opportunity for you or your group to take the floor for a tune or two. Please make contact with an organiser on the night if you want to do this. If you need backing and its not a listed tune, make sure you have the relevant scores please.
We hope that there will always be enough of a willing rhythm section to aid your performance and a PA system will be made available. If you want to plug in a CD player or Mini Disc for backing, please bring one with you.
OPEN NUMBERS
There will be at least two sessions for open numbers where anyone with an instrument will be invited to come up and join in.
If we are playing Jazz, the form will be head first then solos then the head again. For the more experienced, this will be a good opportunity to hone your performance skills. For the less experienced, if you want to play but are worried about taking a solo, join us in the open numbers and just play the head along with everyone else. Maybe you will feel more confident to take a solo another time, you are under no pressure, but the first step is to get up and play.
In the main we are playing from the New Real Books Vol. 1,2 and 3. Also the NW Real Books. A master index can be downloaded from the home page. We are happy to attempt any tunes but we can't know them all, so if you want us to try a tune of your choice, please bring along C, Bb and Eb parts and we will give it a go with or for you.
THE AUDIENCE
If you do not have an instrument, you are still welcome to sit and listen.
Please be aware that although there may well be some experienced musicians from time to time, the majority will be strictly amateur and nothing will be well rehearsed. As a result there will almost certainly be the occasional stumble. As in a rehearsal some numbers may be cut short or repeated. We ask you to please be understanding of this as we want to encourage the less experienced player to keep on trying.
Please note, airborne soft fruit and vegetables are banned from these events, no matter how much your desire!
